Raging (Storm)

Released: JANUARY 13 2003
NEBULA RECORDS
'The Wave / Raging (Storm)' - Cosmic Gate track "Raging (Storm)" featuring Jan Johnston from their "No More Sleep" album has been released in the UK on the Nebula record label (www.nebula.uk.com). It is released with The Wave (which does not feature Jan).
Review: German production outfit Cosmic Gate are already hard trance heroes whilst Nebula is one of the scene's biggest and most consistent labels, so it was always gonna be inevitable that a meeting between the two would be something special. Well, 'The Wave' (and all this release's bonus tracks) more than live up to expectations. 'The Wave' is an awesome instrumental trance track with a sampled vocal whilst 'Raging (Storm)' sees Cosmic Gate team up with the irrepressible Jan Johnston for a full vocal work out. On the remix tip: Svenson & Gielen provide a tough Dutch trance angle and new boys Flutlicht, from the Drizzly label, get funky under Johnston's awesome vocals.
The CD single is released as "The Wave", the Cosmic mix features Raging Flutlicht Vocal Remix, The Wave New Club Mix, Raging New Club Mix and The Wave Svenson & Gielen Remix.

PERFECTO RECORDS
Am I On Pause is the third release from Jan Johnston on the Perfecto label. It was written by Jan Johnston and Rob Davis. Remixes include the anthemic Trailer Trash vocal mix which layers angelic whispers over rippling synths finally erupting into a majestic peak. Oliver Lieb goes sub aquatic with his soothing laidback deep groove. Pete Lorimer picks up the pace with his 29 Palms mix, drenched in warm keys and typical of his glossy West Coast style. Finally it’s over to the lazy Slowhouse Vox mix to cool it back down with its mellow beat and ambient chill. Released on 2 x 12" vinyl only on 29th July 2002.

Calling Your Name

Released: APRIL 14 2003
POSITIVA
2003 saw Jan Johnston's old track given new life. A track that started out as a B-side (called 'The Prayer'), the hook from the song was sampled by BT and Taylor and released back in 1996 as Libra Presents Taylor - Anomaly (Calling Your Name). This became one of the most remixed tracks ever, almost getting an annual outing until 2003 when the original writer (that's Jan in case you lost it somewhere!) took it on again and re-wrote a new song around the hook line using the ideas from the various mixes of her song. The result was a new set of verses to give a brand new context to the disembodied line of "Calling Your Name".
Previously only released as Libra, this was now released by Platipus as Jan Johnston. A number of mixes on different 12" releases were available, and collected onto a single CD available from the Platipus label direct the 10 mix CD is listed here for completeness.

Due in 2001, Jan's first solo effort since signing to Perfecto records was written with Jamie Myerson, but unfortunately the album was never released. A few tracks made it out from the original line-up, notably Superstar separately remixed by Bill Hamel and Todd Terry, Unafraid which was on the soundtrack to John Travolta movie Swordfish and was released as a single, Silent Words enjoyed a single release with various remixes, As The Crack's Appear and Is Disaster Coming were released on a Perfecto Summer Sampler promo.

Released as a 3-track CD single, and 2-track 12" single there were a number of mixes of this track. A six track promo version of this release also came out before the official release, and a few websites had this up as the official release before the three track CD single was released on 16th July 2001.

Flesh

Released: APRIL 9 2001
PERFECTO RECORDS

The facts: RM Coolcuts chart # 1. Highest new entry 7 Buzz Chart at # 3. Plus support from Tong, Jules, & Graham Gold on Radio 1 and Kiss 100. Single of the week for 19th March on Dave Pearce's Radio 1 show.

Jan Johnston finally releases her debut single, 'Flesh', through Perfecto Records on April 9. A soaring whirlwind of euphoric synths, galloping b-lines and poignant pianos laced with Jan's seductive vocals, 'Flesh' is a paean to those carnal instincts that can take over two people after a relationship split.

Love Will Come

In Jan collaborated with Chicane, and the result was this track released by Tomski on 31.1.2000 which entered the UK Top 40 at number 31. Two CDs and a 12" were released containing between them the Radio Edit, Original Mix, 6AM Mix, Airscape Dub, Instrumental and Airscape Remix.

Mercury and Solace

Mercury and Solace was the first single released from BT's album Movement In Still Life, and marked not only the return of the songwriting partnership between Jan and Brian, but also Jan's return to the UK Top 40. The video was filmed in LA's Mohavi desert (someone correct me if I'm wrong on that). The song was released on a few formats in the UK, with the CD single containing the Radio Edit, Quivver's Transatlantic Remix and the Transa Mix. Two 12" were initially released which contained additionally the Dub and the 12" mix, a European 12" appeared which contained four of the mixes listed, and a white label Marc Shimmon (one-sided vinyl) release came after that. BT wrote a track for the 'Go' soundtrack, for which Jan sang a vocal. BT took the vocal off this track and made 'Mercury and Solace' (subtitled 'Reach Out' on the Australian release).

Asking Too Much

This single "featuring Jamie Myerson" was only released in the US (release date 03/12/98) by an independent label Sound Gizmo. This 12" only release contains two mixes - a remix and an instrumental. Both were featured on a compilation CD released in 2000 from the label (Sound Gizmo) called Sonar 1.0.

Skydive

Another single labelled as "featuring Jan Johnston" the massive club anthem 'Skydive' was released by Freefall (DJs Alan Bremner and Anthony Pappa) and co-written by Jan Johnston. Initially released on the Stress record label, then re-released on Superfly, and later re-released on Renaissance. The song was initially released on 16/11/98 in the UK. The Ministry magazine gave it a big thumbs-up, and has become a classic anthem in the clubs in the UK and across the world, also appearing on a number of dance and anthem compilation CDs. The original release features three mixes of the song - an edit, a 12" mix and a dub.
An Operatic mix by X-Static was on the re-released 12" as well as an Oliver Moldan mix on the CD. The Renaissance releases featured mixes by Mara and Way Out West, then later by Warrior, Sono and John Johnson. A number of commercially unreleased mixes of this track exist in the form of white labels only, mixes from the likes of Hifi Bugs, and Adam Dived.

Remember + Lullaby For Gaia

This song appears on Maryland dance artist BT's ESCM album and features once again vocals added (written) by Jan Johnston. The following is BT's own commentary on the track described as a 'melancholy pop number over Giorgio Moroder/New Order house blueprint':
"This track has Jan Johnston from Manchester singing on it. I found her CD two or three years ago in a cut-price bin; she used to be on A&M doing this folky stuff and I thought she had such a magnificently beautiful voice I ended up sampling it for a record I did called 'Anomaly' so we had to call her and get sample clearance. She was like, 'Just have it but promise me when you do your record you'll have me over and we'll do some stuff'. Too right - I was really flattered. We wrote a bunch of stuff but this is the first track we did. I was playing 'Chopin's 21st Prelude' on a piano in Planet 4 - he'd sue me if he was still alive - but anyway I came up with the melody and chorus and sang it to Jan who recorded it and just ad-libbed the verses. Simon Hill is this genius at arranging strings and they come up at the end."
The track was originally released on two CD singles in the UK, both featuring four mixes of the song (the only common mix to both CDs is the edit version) all different to the version available on the album. An 'enhanced' US release of the CD single containing eight tracks (over an hour of music) features seven mixes of the song (including Sasha's mix and an album edit which are not on the UK releases) plus a new mix of "Love, Peace and Grease", as well as some CD-ROM elements - the full videos for "Remember" and "Love, Peace and Grease". The single cover to the US release has the same picture as ESCM rather than the UK cover pictured here.
The song was re-issued in April 1998 in the UK, again on two CD singles with slightly different track listings to the previous release. This time, a new American radio edit (with Simon Hill's strings that were missing from the original edit version) was accompanied by the two Paul Van Dyk remixes and Sasha's remix on one CD, with CD02 featuring BT's remixes from the previous CD01 with a new edit version of his Mood II Swing mix. The single covers of the re-released 'Remember' are shots from the video.

Take Me By The Hand

This single "featuring Jan Johnston" released by dance act Sub-Merge on the AM:PM record label (a subsidiary of A&M) was co-written by Jan Johnston and features her distinctive vocals on four of the five mixes found on the cd single (the fifth being an instrumental). The song did extremely well in the clubs and the dance charts and finally put Jan where she wanted to be - in the UK top 30 - when it reached number 28 in February 1997.

Anomaly - Calling Your Name

In 1996, this was the track that gave Jan's career a boost, albeit in a totally different direction to one she had previously taken. The track was released as "Libra presents Taylor & BT" Calling Your Name - Anomaly, and was mixed from a b-side track (The Prayer) from Jan's single Paris. BT called Jan to get sample clearance and Jan gave him the song with with a promise that they would record together. BT jumped at the chance and we have the songs Remember, Lullaby For Gaia, Mercury and Solace, Sunblind, etc etc to thank for it. There are numerous different releases of the song and at least 15 different mixes to date. The track was re-released in 1999 as it featured in the middle of the movie American Pie.

Paris

After a break of three years Jan Johnston was back in the summer of 1994 with the thoughtful Paris, alone, or so it seemed. The cd single featured two additional tracks that would not appear on the forthcoming Naked But For Lilies album, Am I In Love? and The Prayer.
An artist called Taylor along with BT sampled the chorus from the b-side "The Prayer" for their song 'Anomaly - Calling Your Name').

Movement In Still Life

BT's third album features 'Mercury and Solace', the first single from Movement In Still Life on which Jan sings lead vocal. Jan can also be heard on backing vocals on another single from the album 'Dreaming' as well as backing vocals on 'Running Down The Way Up'. There was a limited edition release in Japan which featured the track 'Sunblind' on which Jan performs the lead vocal.

Hackers 3 - Quiet Then

The third volume in the Hackers soundtrack CDs features a track written by Jan Johnston and Jamie Myerson under the pseudonym 'Cloak'. Jamie Myerson was also on writing credits with Jan for "Silent Words" and the unreleased "Emerging" album.
Jan also featured on the Hackers Vol II soundtrack as it contained the much favoured BT track "Remember".
0043792ERE

R&R - Sunblind

This compilation album from BT is a two disc offering, and has as the title suggests a number of rare BT tracks, and a number of remixed BT tracks. Jan features in both sections on no less than four tracks. Jan takes pole position on both discs. On disc 1 the album kicks off with "Remember" and later contains the first Jan Johnston/BT collaboration released as 'Libra Presents Taylor - Anomaly - Calling Your Name'. This was of course BT sampling Jan's work from her track "The Prayer", a b-side of the "Paris" single from "Naked But For Lilies".
Disc 2 starts with one of the most hotly discussed and sought after BT tracks of all time, "Sunblind". Originally released in a very limited quantity on a Japanese 2-disc version of "Movement In Still Life" this had become the Holy Grail of BT tracks and was a much downloaded and quickly spread mp3 on the internet. Finally, Jan appears again in a more limited capacity on backing vocal duty on the Kirsty Hawkshaw led track "Dreaming".

Swordfish OST - Unafraid

From the stable of Paul Oakenfold, the original soundtrack to the 2001 summer blockbuster 'Swordfish' starring John Travolta, Hugh Jackman and Halle Berry featured many of the acts and tracks much favoured by this superstar DJ.
In the case of Jan Johnston this was a remix of a track from the unreleased "Emerging" album, "Unafraid". The remix more than does the song justice and the track fitted perfectly and was prominently placed in this high octane action movie. Jan performed the track "Unafraid" live at the world premiere of 'Swordfish' in New York.

Ibiza - Superstar, Silent Words

Paul Oakenfold's double CD offering in this case includes two tracks from Jan Johnston. An otherwise unavailable mix of "Silent Words" as well as a remix of Jan's cover of the Carpenters' classic "Superstar". The Superstar mix is by Bill Hamel and the Silent Words mix is a vocal mix from Solar Stone.

Live from the Shadow Lounge, Miami - Am I On Pause?

Another Paul Oakenfold double CD which is recorded live from the Shadow Lounge in Miami. The track on this CD called "Am I On Pause" is different from those included on the single when it was revamped by Jan and Paul in 2002. Initially titled "Time" the track was originally produced by Paul De Aragon, and was written by Jan and songwriter Rob Davis.

There Is More Beyond Words - Totally Blind

A rare A&M sampler from 1994 contains two tracks from Jan Johnston. Whilst signed to A&M Jan released the "Naked But For Lilies" album. One of the tracks on this sampler is "Wild Child", touted as the third single from "Naked But For Lilies" it was never released on its own but is one of the most popular songs from that album. The other track from Jan Johnston on this sampler is called "Totally Blind" and can not be found anywhere else. It is very much in the style of the "Naked But For Lilies" album, and is most likely one of the many songs written by Jan Johnston and Tony Kirkham that never made it to an official release.

In My Memory - Close To You

This full CD from DJ Tiesto features two mixes of the same track from Jan, called "Close To You" there is the original version which is a slow trancey number full of passion and feeling, and a more upbeat remix. Originally released in Japan, this CD is now available across the rest of the world.

Naked But For Lilies

Jan Johnston's second album released 5.9.94 featured a more noticeable synthesised presence but was still very much acoustic based. It also featured something else that Intro... didn't have - different backing singers. Previously Jan had done all her own backing vocals. Paris and Alive were released as singles. The song If Heaven Callz was spotted on a radio airplay list on the net. The planned third single from Naked But For Lilies was Wild Child - either a re-mix or re-recorded version - although the song was never released [shame since this seems to have been most people's favourite from the album]. Again the album contained a wide range of songs from the grandeur of Paris to the thoughtful and serious Don't Make Promises, through Jan's "sexy song" Calling You, Something's In The House - a song about the alcoholic mother of a friend - to Strange Day, a day we've all known at one time.
Track listing:
1. If Heaven Callz
2. Paris
3. I Learned (You Blew Me Out)
4. Wild Child
5. Don't Make Promises
6. Don't Be Lonely
7. Calling You
8. Something's In The House
9. Alive
10. Strange Day

Alive

The upbeat second single from Naked But For Lilies featured a video (see a couple of images from the video here) of Jan in a brightly coloured room with two pigs (Jo and Bennett) and lots of flowers. The cd single itself contained a slower acoustic version of the title track (renamed Still Alive At 3 a.m.) and an additional song When My Hero Dies. Once again a promo only version of the release was pressed with the lyrics printed on the inside of the sleeve.

Paris

  1. Crying Over You
  2. Cold Is The Memory
  3. Crying Over You (accapella version)

656609-2
  1. If This Is Love
  2. Denim And Blue
  3. If This Is Love (Acoustic Version)
  4. Wedding Day

Slide Away

Slide Away recorded in 1990 was the first release by J.J. under the CBS music label, and the first single to be taken from the band's debut album Intro... . The 12" version/cd single both contained four tracks, the string laden title song, with Time Is Like A Train, an early version of Crying Over You and the beautifully simple Secret Smiles (my personal favourite). The sleeve design featured great abstract artwork with the J.J. logo in the centre and is Tony Kirkham's favourite sleeve by the band.

  2. Time Is Like A Train
  3. Crying Over You

If I Never See Sunday Again

If I Never See Sunday Again was the first release by J.J. in 1988 and was recorded at Square One studios, Bury, England. The 12" version features an extended dance mix as well as the 7" version of the song, plus an additional track "Moving Away" reminiscent of another Manchester band The Smiths.
